Best Betting Strategy That Actually Works (Anyone Can Do It)

Did you know the simplest way to win at sports betting doesn’t require any sports knowledge, betting models, stats or insider information?
In this guide, we’ll show you exactly why that’s the case and how you can get started today, even if you’ve never placed a bet in your life.
How Winning at Sports Betting Actually Works
Every bet has a true probability, which is the real chance of it happening. Odds are just that probability turned into a price.
Take a coin flip. Heads has a 50% chance of landing, so the fair odds are 2.00. If a bookmaker offers 1.90 on heads, you’re getting a worse price than the true chance deserves, and that gap is how bookmakers make their money.
But what if someone offered you 2.10 on heads?
That’s a value bet. You’re being paid more than the true probability says you should be. You won’t win every flip, but over time the maths works in your favour. Bet £10 on heads at 2.10 a hundred times and you’d expect to win around 50 of them, returning £1,050 from £1,000 staked. That’s a £50 profit without knowing anything about coins.
Sports betting works exactly the same way. Winning isn’t about picking winners. It’s about repeatedly getting better odds than the true probability of something happening. Do that consistently, and the profit follows.
So, How Do We Calculate True Probability?
This is where winning bettors separate themselves from everyone else.
Some build complex models. Others use data, stats or information the market hasn’t picked up on yet. These approaches can work, but they take time, skill and a lot of effort.
Then there’s the simpler way: let the market do the work for you.
Some bookmakers are known as sharp bookmakers, and the most famous is Pinnacle. Pinnacle takes bets from the smartest bettors in the world, adjusts its prices accordingly and runs on very low margins. As a result, its odds are some of the most accurate estimates of true probability you’ll find anywhere.
So instead of trying to work out the true probability yourself, you simply use Pinnacle’s.
Removing the Margin
Like every bookmaker, Pinnacle builds a margin into its odds. You’ll also hear it called the vig, vigorish or juice, and it’s how bookmakers make sure they profit regardless of the result.
Say Pinnacle prices a tennis match at 1.90 for each player. If the match is truly 50/50, the fair odds should be 2.00 on both sides. That gap is Pinnacle’s margin, in this case 5.26%. The margin also tells you something useful: the higher it is, the less confident Pinnacle is in its own prices.
Strip the margin out and you’re left with the fair odds, Pinnacle’s best estimate of the true probability. That gives you a simple target: if another bookmaker offers better odds than Pinnacle’s fair odds, you’ve found a value bet.
In this example, anything above 2.00 on either player is value, or +EV (positive expected value).
The Target: Closing Line Value
Getting value when you place a bet is a great start, but that value needs to still be there when the event starts.
This is called closing line value, or CLV for short. It measures the difference between the odds you took and the closing odds, the very last price available before the event begins.
Calculating it is simple. Divide your odds by Pinnacle’s fair closing odds and subtract 1. If you bet at 2.05 and the fair closing odds are 2.00, that’s 2.05 ÷ 2.00 = 1.025, or +2.5% CLV.
Do this consistently and the results take care of themselves. Beating the closing line, bet after bet, is the most reliable path to long-term profit.
Where Can I Find These Opportunities?
Now you know the process, all you need is a tool that finds these opportunities for you in real time.

That’s exactly what the OddsHub Terminal does. It tracks Pinnacle’s prices around the clock, removes the margin to give you the fair odds, and shows you the moment another bookmaker is offering better. Each alert takes you straight to the bet on your bookmaker, so you can grab the price before it disappears.
Once you’ve placed a bet, the Terminal tracks your EV and CLV automatically and settles your bets for you, so you always know whether you’re beating the closing line without lifting a finger.

Frequently asked questions
- What are dropping odds?
- Dropping odds are prices that shorten quickly across bookmakers, usually because money is landing on one side. They often move on sharp or informed action before the wider market catches up.
- Do dropping odds mean I should bet that side?
- Not on their own. A sharp drop is a signal worth checking, but you still want a price that beats the closing line. Use the drop to find the bet, then take the best number across bookmakers.
- How fast do I need to act on a dropping odd?
- Soft bookmakers can lag sharp moves by anything from seconds to a few minutes. The earlier you catch a drop, the more likely a soft book still has a beatable price.
